This 95,000 SF addition and renovation to the Highland District Hospital expands the Hospital’s current footprint by over 39,000 SF. Positioned as a rural, critical access hospital, Highland District Hospital’s mission is to bring services to the community that would allow for advanced health care, locally. Originally built in 1962, the Hospital employs more than 350 people, representing more than 25 specialties and subspecialties. This community-centered hospital serves Highland and the surrounding counties, and is known for its state-of-the-art technology and innovative health care services.

The project aimed to invest in expanding the capabilities and technologies offered by the Hospital to ensure progressive treatment and care options would continue. The 39,000 SF addition and renovation includes the addition of private, inpatient rooms equipped with the newest technologies, onsite and expanded outpatient rehabilitation services, a new cancer care unit, an expanded and remodeled surgery unit, the expansion and remodel of The Café (including an extended outdoor eating and sitting area), additional patient registration access points, and a more easily accessible patient entrance with improved traffic access. Outside of the hospital, an additional 174 parking spaces were added to the existing lot. Construction was completed in multiple phases to ensure the Hospital remained fully operational during construction.

As part of the construction management team, Megen worked in collaboration with the lead CM, and our local Superintendent providing safety management, subcontractor management, schedule coordination, and owner communication Our team hired as many local contractors as possible (including Megen’s superintendent) to meet the owner’s goal of a locally built project.

As the project involved construction to an existing, occupied medical facility, it was crucial to keep construction progressing while not disturbing the hospital. Completed on schedule in 2020, the expansion has elevated the services of Highland District Hospital, providing the community with a higher level of care options now and into the future.

“Seeing this project develop from the initial planning, to groundbreaking, to the steel beams being raised, all the way to the final light bulb placement has been a project of a lifetime for me and this organization. It was very important that we involved as many local companies as possible for this renovation and build- as we wanted our community to be a part of this final product, too.”
