This multi-building program for Fairfield City Schools consisted of demolishing two existing schools, and constructing two new elementary schools and a new freshman high school. These modern education facilities balance flexible and collaborative learning spaces with interactive gathering spaces, while incorporating the District’s heritage.

The new 90,336 SF elementary schools serve grades PK-5, pairing a single story facility with a two-story classroom wing. Each wing has traditional classrooms, open extended learning areas for flexible team teaching and group activities, and flexible space rooms with an operable dividing wall. The new schools also include art and music spaces, technology labs, gymnasium, clinic and administrative offices, as well as a media center with hand-painted murals.

The new freshman school consisted of 140,000 SF of learning space including academic wings with 50 classrooms and 6 extended learning areas, science and technology labs, special education resource spaces, learning commons, gymnasium, open cafeteria/lobby area, kitchen, media center, administrative areas with conference rooms, auditorium with scene shop, and music/art rooms. Both buildings achieved LEED Silver certification.

Megen, in conjunction with our JV partner, provided preconstruction and construction management services for Fairfield City School District and the OFCC. Construction coordination on an occupied K-12 school campus was significant as the new elementary school was built within 14 feet of the existing building. Our team ensured a safe site with space for efficient parent/bus drop-off and pick-up. Our team also streamlined the project schedule by fast tracking an early site package, which improved both the quality and cost of the project. All schools were completed on schedule for the start of the 2017-2018 academic year.
