As the first step of their master plan, this rural school district needed an elementary school facility that provided space, technology and security to serve its growing district. Batavia Schools aspired to have the new school be part of a master plan to house the district on one campus with the goal of maximizing the academic space to accommodate their projected future growth.

The new two-story facility for grades PK-5 has an “H” design utilizing wings to house individual grades in classroom pods with a shared common space and oversized corridors for extended learning environments and extracurricular activities. Pre-K and Kindergarten spaces are equipped with adjoining restrooms. The new facility also includes a cafetorium with stage, kitchen, gymnasium, media center, and playground areas. Modern technology upgrades are paramount throughout the facility to give each student accessibility. The main entrance and corridors are driven by security features including surveillance cameras and lockdown doors, creating safe zones for students and staff. A larger bus lane and student drop off area were also constructed.

The school district’s rural identity and eco-friendly focus is reflected with murals of nature’s seasons adorning the walls of the schools, which also symbolize the path of students’ education. Efficient mechanical systems and an abundance of natural light through large windows and sloped ceilings supported the District’s commitment to the environment, and the facility achieved LEED Silver certification.

Megen served as the owner’s agent for Batavia Local School District, ensuring the project was built within budget, on schedule and meeting quality standards. We monitored the entire construction process from preconstruction through post-construction ensuring State guidelines were followed. During the design process, our preconstruction team reviewed design documents for constructability and value engineering items, which allowed the Owner to purchase $2M in additional scope item. During construction, we ensured the building’s quality was true to the specifications. The project was completed on time and under budget.
