The construction of iFly’s first Ohio facility, located in the mixed-use Liberty Center complex north of Cincinnati, is one of 30 U.S. locations and 70 worldwide locations. The 5,175 SF facility is surrounded on four sides by freefall simulator equipment, necessary to operate an indoor flight chamber with winds ranging from 60 to 265 mph. The occupied first floor level is dedicated to indoor skydiving and freefall simulator activities, as well as training, gathering (party rooms), retail, offices, and support functions. The unoccupied freefall spaces include a large, below grade basement, two vertical return air towers, and a service deck. The new facility provides STEM demonstrations for K-12 students, virtual reality options and a flight school program for children 4 to 16 years old, and events for those with unique physical needs.
As the general contractor, Megen oversaw the construction process ensuring safety, quality, schedule and budget guidelines were met. As this was the Texas-based iFly’s first Ohio location, they depended on our local knowledge and experience to assist with County permitting and building processes. Challenging winter weather and procurement of owner-materials were met with innovative schedule coordination, and a commitment to quality in providing the equipment and coordination for iFly to complete their installations efficiently. With a record-setting amount of rain and snow days during the 2018-2019 fall and winter seasons, the project had to be accelerated to maintain iFly’s planned spring opening day. The project was completed on schedule and on budget, with the owner noting that construction was the smoothest transition they have had.
